What is a DGSA?

A dangerous goods safety advisor (DGSA) is a qualified individual who advises on the transport of dangerous goods. These include items such as explosives, fuel, chemicals, toxic substances and more. The main responsibilities of a DGSA include:

  • Overseeing the consignment, transportation, packing and loading of dangerous cargo.
  • Ensuring the company is compliant in their handling, and offering advice to ensure safe delivery.
  • Monitoring and carrying out training of staff.
  • Carrying out regular reports on the compliance of the business.

Why do I need a DGSA?

Many companies who deal in the transport of dangerous goods may not realise they need a dangerous goods safety advisor at all. It is in-fact a legal requirement for businesses that regularly transport dangerous goods in large quantities and across large distances/internationally. Failure to adhere to these guidelines could lead to prosecution under the DGSA regulations as well as the Health and Safety at Work Act (1974). In 2022/23, HSE completed 216 criminal prosecutions, with a 94% total conviction rate.

A dangerous goods safety advisor is required by law whether you're transporting dangerous goods via land, sea or air, with DGSAs typically specialising in a couple of these areas. This is more than a legal obligation, however, as having advice from a qualified DGSA is the best way to protect your employees, product and company from the consequences of mishandling dangerous goods. The laws and guidelines surrounding dangerous goods transport is relatively complex, so you should put your faith in a qualified DGSA to steer you in the safest and most correct direction.
